Gavel Gets Registered

Agricultural chemicals manufacturer Rohm and Haas Company has received registration from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the use of Gavel 75 DF fungicide on potatoes.

Gavel 75 DF fungicide is a new protectant fungicide targeted for potato late blight control, and also for control of early blight. The new active ingredient in Gavel is zoxamide, which belongs to the benzamide class of chemistry.

Gavel stops fungal growth by inhibiting cell division, preventing the late blight fungus from reproducing. This unique mode of action for late blight control makes the product a good choice for resistance management rotations. Gavel is also useful for its ability to penetrate the waxy cuticle of plant foliage, which gives it exceptional rainfastness.

Gavel is best used as a protectant spray starting at the first signs of disease or reports of disease in a locality. Field work determined that Gavel should be used in a 5 to 7 day schedule when late blight is present and conditions favor disease, or in a 7 to 10 day schedule when disease pressure is low and environmental conditions do not favor disease development.

In addition to the U.S., Canada and Mexico are expected to grant Gavel registrations as part of a joint NAFTA review. State registrations also are expected in time for use this year.
