ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AWARDS: Four operations honored for their stewardship effort
The National Potato Council’s 2003 Environmental Stewardship Award was given to four growers from across the U.S for their outstanding achievement in the area of pesticide risk reduction. The winners of the award use a pesticide reduction strategy, IPM and manage their farm’s water, soil and habitat conservation needs. Some have begun to test biologic control methods in their operation.

United States sees first-ever potato trade deficit
n 2003, the U.S. trade balance in potatoes and potato products was in deficit for the first time ever. Total U.S. exports were valued at $646 million in 2003 – down 11 percent from 2002, while imports were valued at $682 million – up 19 percent. The $36 million deficit came after a decades-long surplus, which peaked in 1995 at $437 million.

Simplot to permanently close processing facility

The J.R. Simplot Company has announced that it will permanently close its Hermiston, Ore., potato processing plant in a phased shutdown over the next nine months.
